DECK THE HALLS | with design
Call me old fashioned but I like a little cup of nostalgia with my holiday season. Hot chocolate with marshmallows floating, ice dripping off frozen mittens & black and white Bing Crosby movies. That said keeping the decor simple for your home or vacation rental means adding those details with low cost that brings a smile to any age.
FEEL AT HOME | scents of the season
HOW TO: Roam free at your local Christmas tree lot or backyard to collect the free pine cuttings. Tie on some bells, place the pine in a glass jar with discarded cones (painted or unpainted white or gold), and you have yourself the fresh scent of outdoors & the feeling of the holidays as a child. Boil up some cranberries, orange slices and cinnamon sticks with a sprig of thyme and you have a home made popuri to last the entire month of December.
ALTERNATE VINTAGE | tis the season
Whether store bought or DIY, the colorful balls and rope add much pop to the sound of the crackling fireplace. Vintage tags painted and hung with twine or fishing wire make for an original advent calendar. You can hang it from the fireplace, window or make your own in the center of the dining table as decor.
WELCOME IN | essentials
HOW TO: As seen above, if the only twinkle you add to your space is the essential wreath on the front door & the garland on the fireplace or stairwell. Add some hand beaded wooden garlands for texture and softness. Don’t forget you can cheat a little and buy yourself some cream pillar candles or built in holiday smells reminiscent of burning wood, cinnamon cookies & ... tacky Christmas sweaters.
